Teenager Jailed For Failing to Return Overdue LIBRARY BOOK

Jory-Enck-2667719
A teenager has been jailed for failing to return – an overdue LIBRARY BOOK.
Jory Enck borrowed the book – a study guide for the General Eduational Development (GED) exams - from his local library in Copperas Cove, Texas in 2010.
He was arrested under a local bylaw which allows police to detain residents for not returning overdue books within 90 days, and failing to respond to phone calls or emails from the library.
Local officials introduced the law after they found themselves spending a “tremendous” amount of money replacing books that people didn’t return.
Local Judge Bill Price said the ordinance had been met with “universal hatred” as “nobody wants to get arrested over a library book.”
Enck was booked into jail, but later released on $200 bail. Journalists from local TV station KEYE visited the library and found the book had been returned – with Enck’s library card inside – the day after his arrest.
Arrests under the library bylaw usually take place if police come across people with overdue books during routine stops.
Sergeant Julie Lehmann said arrests usually happen when “contact with the individuals on a traffic stop, or we go to their residence, or whatever.”
